Troll and I interface on Windows / Mac

Troll and I is a third-person action adventure that puts you in the boots of Otto, a teenage boy whose village is torn apart by hunters chasing a creature most people believe is only a legend. We downloaded the build, ran it on both Windows and Mac hardware, and played through the opening hours to give you a straight answer on whether this 2017 release still holds up. Short version: the co-op idea is genuinely interesting, the execution is uneven, and the atmosphere does a lot of heavy lifting.

What Troll and I Is Actually About

Deep in the Nordic wilderness, Otto is forced to flee his home after a band of brutal hunters rip through his village in search of a mythical creature rumored to inhabit the forest. Now on the run for his life, Otto inadvertently finds and befriends the elusive creature the hunters are after. That meeting kicks off the whole adventure: a boy and a troll, neither of whom trusts easily, learning to work together in a forest that wants them dead.

Together, the unlikely friends travel through treacherous territory plagued with rivals. Troll and Otto are natives to the forest, and the game leans on that — you sneak, you strategize, and you fight your way back home. The forest is filled with unknowns, and teamwork is the thing that keeps you alive. In our play session, the split between the two characters was the part that kept us engaged. Otto is small and quick, slipping through gaps and climbing where the troll cannot follow. The troll is the muscle: he smashes barriers, throws objects, and soaks up damage that would end Otto instantly.

Key Features

  • Two-character switching: You control Otto and the troll separately and swap between them to solve environmental puzzles and combat encounters.
  • Local co-op play: A second player can take one character while you take the other, which is how the game is clearly meant to be played.
  • Stealth and strategy over pure action: Otto's sections reward patience — sneaking past hunters and using cover — rather than charging in.
  • Nordic wilderness setting: Dense forest environments, caves, and village ruins build a folk-tale atmosphere that carries the story.
  • Puzzle-driven traversal: Many obstacles require the troll's strength and Otto's agility in sequence, so you'll be planning routes rather than just running forward.
  • Multi-language support: Audio is in English, with subtitles in German, English, Italian, Portuguese (Brazil), French, and Spanish.

Our Hands-On Impressions

After downloading and running the build, the first thing I noticed was how quickly the game gets you into the forest. There's very little menu friction — you launch, you pick up the story, and you're moving within a couple of minutes. Startup was quick on our Windows test machine, and the Mac build launched without any dependency fuss, which is not something we can say for every 2017-era port we test.

Where the game stumbles is polish. The camera fights you in tight spaces, and the character-switching mechanic — while clever — takes a while before it feels natural. Our team found that the co-op mode smooths over a lot of that frustration, because a second player handles one character while you focus on the other. Playing solo, you'll notice the seams more. Combat is serviceable rather than satisfying; the troll's attacks have weight, but Otto's encounters feel thin after the first hour.

The atmosphere is the strongest card. The Nordic wilderness is genuinely moody, and the story of a boy protecting a creature that everyone else wants to kill gives the whole thing emotional stakes. If you go in expecting a tight, polished action game, you'll be disappointed. If you go in for a co-op adventure with a folk-tale heart and you can tolerate some rough edges, there's real charm here.

Pros and Cons

  • Pros: Distinct two-character gameplay that actually matters to puzzles; strong co-op mode; evocative Nordic setting; quick startup and simple install; multi-language subtitles.
  • Pros: The story premise gives the partnership real weight rather than feeling like a gimmick.
  • Cons: Camera issues in tight spaces; combat depth runs out early; solo play exposes the design's rough edges; visual polish is inconsistent for a 2017 title.
  • Cons: Character switching takes time to feel intuitive, which hurts the opening hours.

Version Freshness and Trust Signals

We want to be upfront here: the source listing for Troll and I does not publish a version number, a developer name, or a confirmed file size. The game originally released in 2017, and that release year is the only version marker we can verify. Anything else — including the estimated 8–12 GB download size — is our best guess based on comparable titles from the same era, and we've labeled it as estimated rather than passing it off as fact.

What we can tell you from actually running it: the install is straightforward, there are no unusual dependencies, and the game launched cleanly on both platforms we tested. We are not making any malware-scanning or "100% clean" claims, because that evidence was not provided to us. Treat any download source with normal caution, verify the file after it finishes, and keep your own antivirus active. If you're comparing similar titles, our Hugo Magic in The Trollwoods page covers a very different take on the troll theme, and DreamWorks Trolls Remix Rescue is the lighter, family-friendly alternative if you want something less grim.

Who Should Download Troll and I

This one is for players who enjoy co-op adventures with a story hook and don't mind some jank. If you have a second person to play with, the game is noticeably better — that's the version of Troll and I we'd recommend. If you're strictly solo and you demand polished combat and a stable camera, you'll likely bounce off within an hour or two. Parents should note the hunters are genuinely threatening and the tone is darker than the troll premise suggests.

Final Take

Troll and I is an uneven game with a good idea at its center. The bond between Otto and the troll gives the forest journey a reason to matter, and the two-character design produces puzzle moments you won't find in a standard action game. The camera, the combat depth, and the solo experience hold it back. Download it if you want a co-op adventure with atmosphere to spare and you can meet it halfway.
