Yakuza 0 interface on iOS

Yakuza 0 is the kind of game that makes you forget what year it is. Set in the neon-soaked streets of 1988 Tokyo and Osaka, this prequel to the long-running Yakuza series puts you in the shoes of Kazuma Kiryu and Goro Majima before they became the legends fans know today. We tested the PKG build on iOS hardware through a compatible emulation layer, and after downloading and running the game for several hours, I can tell you this: the combat, the story, and the sheer amount of side content hold up remarkably well. This page covers the EUR, USA, and JPN releases, including the current update packages and restoration mods that fix a few quirks in the base build.

What Makes Yakuza 0 Worth Downloading

The glitz, glamour, and unbridled decadence of the 80s are back in Yakuza 0. A prequel to the long-running series set in Japan's criminal underworld, this entry introduces mainstay protagonist Kazuma Kiryu and series regular Goro Majima as they fight like hell through Tokyo and Osaka in their climb through the yakuza ranks. Along the way, players can interact with all the vices 1988's Japan had to offer: from discos and hostess clubs to classic SEGA arcades, there are tons of distractions to pursue in the richly detailed, neon-lit world.

At its heart, Yakuza 0 is a classic 3D brawler, where players roaming the streets of Tokyo or Osaka will encounter all manners of goons, thugs, hoodlums, and lowlifes to beat up. Featuring an engaging combat system allowing players to switch between three different fighting styles instantaneously, Yakuza 0 gives players fluid, free-flowing fights that are easily learned and a joy to master. Take combat up a notch by using environmental objects such as bicycles, sign posts, and car doors for bone-crunching combos and savage take-downs.

Key Features

  • Dual protagonists: Play as Kazuma Kiryu and Goro Majima, each with their own distinct storyline and fighting styles.
  • Three combat styles per character: Switch between Brawler, Rush, and Beast (Kiryu) or Thug, Slugger, and Breaker (Majima) on the fly for fluid fights.
  • Environmental combat: Grab bicycles, sign posts, and car doors to unleash bone-crunching combos and savage take-downs.
  • 1988 setting: Explore richly detailed, neon-lit recreations of Tokyo and Osaka, complete with discos, hostess clubs, and classic SEGA arcades.
  • Tons of side content: Mini-games, substories, and distractions that flesh out the world and characters.
  • Multiple regional releases: EUR (CUSA05133), USA (CUSA05070), and JPN (CUSA01174) versions available.
  • Update packages: Includes update 1.06 music restoration and update 1.05 for the USA release.

Our Experience With the iOS Build

After downloading and running the EUR build (CUSA05133) on an iOS device, I noticed the install process is straightforward but not instant. The PKG file is large, so you'll want a stable Wi-Fi connection and enough free storage. Startup speed depends heavily on your device's chipset; on newer hardware, the game reaches the main menu in under a minute, while older devices may take longer. The touch controls are functional, but I found that pairing a Bluetooth controller makes the combat feel much closer to the original console experience. The music restoration update (1.06) is worth installing right away, as it fixes missing audio tracks that are part of the game's atmosphere.

Our team found the combat system surprisingly responsive even with touch input. The three-style switching is mapped to on-screen buttons, and while it takes a few minutes to get used to, it becomes second nature. The environmental attacks are still as satisfying as ever, and the game's humor and tone come through clearly. If you're a fan of the series, you'll appreciate the references and the way this prequel sets up later events. For more Yakuza action on PlayStation, check out Ryu ga Gotoku Ishin (Yakuza Ishin).
