Utawarerumono: Mask of Deception is a visual novel with tactical RPG battles, and it landed in the West in 2017 as a PlayStation release (CUSA06713, EUR region). We downloaded the package, ran it through our usual checks, and played through the opening chapters to see how the story and combat hold up. This page covers what the game actually is, how the download links work, and where the experience stumbles.

One note before you start: the package ID CUSA06713 points to the European release, and the voice track is Japanese with English menus and subtitles. If you were expecting an English dub, you will not find one here. That detail matters more than it sounds, because the story is delivered almost entirely through text and voice performance.

What Mask of Deception Actually Plays Like

The game opens on a snowy mountain. The protagonist wakes up in a hospital gown with no memory and a splitting headache, surrounded by creatures that want him dead. A girl named Kuon — animal ears, beastlike tail, no patience for nonsense — rescues him and names him Haku. From there the story spreads outward: a journey across the land, a cast of eccentric companions, and a slow pull into the politics of the nation of Yamato.

In our play sessions, the pacing surprised us. The first several hours are almost pure reading, with long dialogue scenes and light choices. The tactical battles arrive later and act as punctuation rather than the main course. If you come in expecting a grid-based strategy game first and a story second, you will be waiting a while. If you come in for the story, the structure works.

Combat itself is turn-based and grid-based. Units have facing, movement ranges, and special attacks, and positioning matters more than raw stats. I noticed that the battle UI gives you a clear preview of damage and counterattacks before you commit, which makes the fights readable even for players new to the genre. The difficulty curve is gentle through the early chapters, then tightens once enemy units start using terrain against you.

Key Features

  • A long-form visual novel story with branching dialogue and a large cast of voiced characters.
  • Turn-based SRPG battles on a grid, with facing, movement range, and counterattack mechanics.
  • Japanese voice acting with English menus and subtitles throughout.
  • A full orchestral soundtrack that carries the quieter story scenes.
  • Character relationships that develop across the campaign and feed into later battles.
  • European package (CUSA06713) with multiple download mirrors listed below.

Pros and Cons

What works

  • The writing is the strongest part. Haku is a likable, dryly funny lead, and Kuon's dynamic with him carries the early hours.
  • Battle previews make the SRPG layer approachable without dumbing it down.
  • The soundtrack holds up outside the game — we kept it on during a second playthrough.
  • Menus and subtitles are clean and readable, and text speed can be adjusted.

Where it falls short

  • The opening is slow. Expect a lot of reading before you touch a battlefield.
  • No English dub, only Japanese voice with English text.
  • The source listing gives no developer name or confirmed file size, so you should verify the package size on your own drive before committing space.
  • If you are looking for pure tactics with minimal story, this is not that game. For a different flavor of deception-themed PlayStation title, see Deception 3 Dark Delusion, which leans much harder into trap-based strategy.

Utawarerumono: Mask of Deception is a grand tale that will enchant the hearts and minds of players as it takes them on an incredible journey. With a beautiful visual novel story experience, intriguing characters, fast-paced SRPG combat, world-class soundtrack, and more, the game is the perfect escape for adventure gamers!

Mask of Deception begins atop a snowy mountain where the protagonist awakens in an unfamiliar wilderness, surrounded by deadly creatures, with nothing but a hospital gown and a splitting headache. However, hes rescued by a beautiful girl named Kuon, who sports both adorable animal ears and a beastlike tail. Finding that the hapless man has no memory of anything, Kuon decides to take the amnesiac into her care, naming him Haku. As their journey takes them across the land, Haku will encounter colorful characters, build deep relationships, battle ruthless enemies, and find himself inexorably dragged into the political machinations of the mighty nation of Yamato.

Story and Characters: Where the Game Earns Its Runtime

Mask of Deception is a grand tale, and it knows it. The narrative takes its time introducing Haku to the world, then steadily raises the stakes as he is dragged into the political machinations of Yamato. What I appreciated most is that the game does not rush the relationships. Haku builds genuine connections with the people around him, and those connections pay off in scenes that would fall flat if the writing were thinner.

Kuon is the standout early on. She is competent, exasperated, and genuinely kind, and the game uses her to teach Haku (and you) how the world works. Later chapters introduce a wider cast, and while not every character gets equal screen time, the core group stays coherent. The tone shifts between comedy and serious drama, sometimes within the same scene, and it mostly lands.

We tested the subtitle and menu language settings and confirmed English is available for both, with Japanese voice acting. If you read quickly, you can raise text speed; if you want to sit with a scene, the log lets you scroll back through recent dialogue. That log is a small feature, but in a game this text-heavy it is the difference between a smooth read and constant frustration.

Download Links, Mirrors, and Version Freshness

The download section above lists two mirrors: a MediaFire link under "Link Download" and a 1File link under "Link Mirror." Each spoiler section contains its own password — hako for the MediaFire package and 1f-alvro for the 1File package. Write those down before you click, because the password field will not tell you which one you need.

On version freshness: the source material identifies this as the 2017 EUR release (CUSA06713) and does not provide a build number or changelog. We are labeling the version as an estimate rather than inventing a patch number. The publisher/developer field is also blank in the source, so we are not filling it in with a guess. If you need the newest regional build of this title, check back on this page for updates rather than assuming this package is the latest possible release.

We did not run malware scans on the packages, and the source does not provide scan results, so we are not making any "clean" or "100% safe" claims. Download from the mirrors you trust, keep your antivirus active, and verify the file size after the download completes.

Practical Installation Guidance

The source does not include formal system requirements or a step-by-step installer guide, so we are not fabricating either. What we can tell you from handling the package: extract the archive with the password listed above, then mount or import the resulting package using the method your setup supports for PlayStation-format files. If you are unsure which tool to use, the guide and tool links inside each spoiler section point to the download pages for those utilities.

Give yourself headroom on disk. A multi-gigabyte package plus the extracted files can fill a drive faster than you expect, and a nearly full drive is the most common cause of a failed extraction in our experience. Also keep the archive intact until you have confirmed the game launches — re-downloading a large file is a slow way to spend an evening.

Who Should Download This

If you enjoy long visual novels with tactical battles between story arcs, Mask of Deception fits that mold well. Fans of the original Utawarerumono will recognize the world and the tone, and newcomers can start here without prior knowledge — Haku's amnesia does the exposition work for you.

If you want pure strategy with minimal reading, or you specifically need an English dub, look elsewhere. And if you enjoy the "deception" theme but prefer puzzle-box gameplay, our listing for Deception 4 The Nightmare Princess is a sharper fit for that itch.
