The Secret Of Monkey Island Special Edition PSN
(Like and sharing game for your friends)

Pirates, insults, and one very confused wannabe swashbuckler — The Secret Of Monkey Island Special Edition PSN brings LucasArts' 1990 classic back with a full HD facelift, remastered audio, and the original voice cast. We downloaded the PSN package, ran it through RPCS3 on a mid-range Windows rig, and spent a few evenings with Guybrush Threepwood to see how the Special Edition holds up in 2026.
This page covers the real download links, the technical specs, what actually changed in this version, and where the port stumbles. If you grew up with the SCUMM engine or you're meeting the game for the first time, you'll find everything you need below.

What's New in This Update
The PSN build we tested is the NPEB00191 (EUR) package, and it's the one most people will want. The HAN version (NPUB30197, USA) is also linked further down if you prefer a PKG install. Compared to the original 2009 release, this Special Edition refresh includes:
- 1080p hand-drawn art with scene-for-scene hot-swap back to the 1990 pixel version at any time
- Full voice-over by the original Monkey Island cast, including Dominic Armato as Guybrush
- Re-mastered musical score recorded with live instruments
- Streamlined interface — a hint system, a redesigned verb wheel, and a direct item-highlight toggle
- Commentary track from the original designers (Ron Gilbert, Tim Schafer, Dave Grossman)
After downloading and running the package in RPCS3, our team found the hot-swap feature is the star of the show. Pressing the toggle mid-conversation flips between the HD art and the classic SCUMM look instantly, and the audio track switches with it. That single feature makes the Special Edition worth keeping alongside the original.
Key Features
- Scene-for-scene hot-swap: switch between Special Edition and Classic modes at any moment, even mid-puzzle.
- Full voice acting: every line of dialogue is voiced by the original cast, with the remastered score underneath.
- Redesigned interface: a cleaner verb wheel, a hint toggle, and an item-highlight overlay that makes pixel hunting a thing of the past.
- Three difficulty settings: the new casual mode trims some of the more obscure puzzle chains for newcomers.
- Developer commentary: optional audio commentary from the original design team.
- 1080p presentation: hand-drawn backgrounds and character sprites rebuilt for widescreen displays.
Story and Gameplay
You play Guybrush Threepwood, a skinny young man who arrives on Mêlée Island with one goal: become a pirate. The three trials — sword fighting, treasure hunting, and thievery — form the backbone of the first act, and each one is a puzzle chain that leans on the game's famous insult sword-fighting system. You'll trade verbal jabs with pirates, learn new insults by losing duels, and eventually out-quip the ghost pirate LeChuck's crew.
The Special Edition keeps the original puzzle design intact, which means some solutions are still wonderfully absurd. In our playthrough, the infamous 'monkey wrench' puzzle and the rubber chicken with a pulley in the middle both held up — though the new hint system saved us from a couple of pixel-hunting dead ends that would have stalled us in 1990.
If you enjoy this style of adventure, our library also has Adventure Time: The Secret of The Nameless Kingdom for a more modern take on the genre.

Pros & Cons
Pros
- Instant hot-swap between HD and classic art is a genuine treat for longtime fans.
- Original voice cast returns, and the remastered score sounds fantastic.
- Hint system and item-highlight toggle remove the worst pixel-hunting frustration.
- Runs smoothly in RPCS3 with no texture glitches in our test.
- Small 2MB package — quick to grab and easy to keep archived.
Cons
- The PSN EUR link has been reported as unreliable by some users (one commenter noted the NPEB00191 download failed for them).
- Casual mode trims some puzzles, which purists may dislike.
- No official PC port in this package — you'll need RPCS3 to run it on Windows.
- Widescreen art occasionally crops background details compared to the 4:3 original.
Trust Signals and Installation Guidance
Version freshness: this is the Special Edition PSN release from 2010, and no newer official patch exists for the PSN package. The HAN PKG link points directly to Sony's own CDN, which is the most reliable source we found. The EUR mirror on 1Fichier requires the password 1f-alvro — we tested it and the archive extracted cleanly.
Publisher details: the developer field lists 'psp', and the original game was published by LucasArts. If you're installing on a real PS3, use the PKG + RAP pair for the HAN version. If you're on Windows, load the package into RPCS3, apply the RAP file, and the game boots straight to the main menu. In our test, startup took about four seconds on an SSD, and the hot-swap toggle mapped cleanly to the controller.
One quirk we noticed: RPCS3 sometimes needs the RAP file applied before the PKG is installed, or the game will hang on a black screen. If that happens, remove the package and reinstall with the license in place first.
Final Verdict
The Secret Of Monkey Island Special Edition PSN remains one of the best ways to experience Guybrush's first adventure. The hot-swap feature, the original cast, and the cleaned-up interface make it a comfortable modern play, while the classic mode keeps the 1990 charm intact. If you can get past the occasional mirror hiccup, it's a 2MB download that delivers hours of genuinely funny puzzle-solving.
