What The Long Dark Actually Is
The Long Dark places you in the Northern Canadian wilderness after a mysterious flash of light knocks out the world as you know it. There are no zombies, no monsters, and no scripted jump scares. The threats are temperature, hunger, thirst, fatigue, wildlife, and your own decisions. The game splits into two distinct halves: an episodic story mode called WINTERMUTE and a free-form Survival Mode sandbox. Each offers a different pace and a different reason to keep playing.
Key Features
- Two complete game modes: WINTERMUTE story episodes and the open-ended Survival Mode sandbox.
- No hand-holding: the game gives you information but never the answers — you have to earn the right to survive.
- Permadeath in Survival Mode: when you die, your save is deleted, so every decision matters.
- Four Experience Modes: Pilgrim for a quiet, pensive run; Interloper for veterans who want a real fight for a single week.
- Custom Mode settings: tailor the survival sandbox to your own tastes if none of the four presets fit.
- Episodic story content: the first four WINTERMUTE episodes represent roughly 30 hours of gameplay, with Episode Five included in the price and unlocked free when released.
- Original score by Sascha Dikiciyan.
- Multi-language support: voice in English, with screen text in Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), Dutch, English, Finnish, French (France), German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese (Brazil and Portugal), Russian, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish, and Ukrainian.
Story Mode: WINTERMUTE
WINTERMUTE follows two playable characters — bush pilot Will Mackenzie and Dr. Astrid Greenwood — after their plane crashes deep in the Northern Canadian wilderness. The story unfolds across four currently available episodes, with a fifth planned. Episodes 1 and 2 were completely overhauled in December 2018 as part of the Redux Update, which reworked mission structure, story beats, dialogue, and animations.
Episode One — "Do Not Go Gentle"
Mackenzie and Astrid are separated after the crash. As Mackenzie searches for Astrid, he reaches the small town of Milton and starts to understand the scope of this quiet apocalypse.
Episode Two — "Luminance Fugue"
The search pushes Mackenzie deeper into the savage winter wilderness. A mysterious trapper may hold the key to finding Astrid — but can he be trusted?
Episode Three — "Crossroads Elegy"
You play as Dr. Astrid Greenwood, rescued from near death by an enigmatic stranger. Facing the blizzards of Pleasant Valley, she must use all her medical skill on the survivors she meets while trying to find Mackenzie and get closer to the mystery pulling them toward Perseverance Mills.
Episode Four — "Fury, Then Silence"
A murderous gang of convicts has captured Mackenzie. To escape one of the darkest corners of Great Bear Island, he has to survive his fiercest enemy yet, recover the Hardcase, keep searching for Astrid, and save the innocents caught in the confrontation.
Note that WINTERMUTE does not use permadeath — that rule applies to Survival Mode only. Episode Five is included in the game and will unlock for free when it ships.
Survival Mode
Survival Mode is the free-form, non-narrative sandbox that was refined over nearly three years in Early Access. Your only goal is survival and your only end is death. Every run becomes its own survival story. Four Experience Modes let you pick a challenge level: Pilgrim Mode is meant to be quiet and pensive, while Interloper Mode gives only the most experienced survivors a realistic chance to last a week. If none of the four suit you, Custom Mode settings let you tune the sandbox to your specific tastes.
Pros & Cons
- Pros:
- Genuine survival tension with no zombies or cheap scares — the environment itself is the antagonist.
- Substantial content: roughly 30 hours across the four available WINTERMUTE episodes plus an open-ended sandbox.
- Flexible difficulty through four Experience Modes and Custom Mode.
- Broad screen-language support across 19 languages.
- Cons:
- Permadeath in Survival Mode deletes your save on death, which is unforgiving for new players.
- Episode Five is not yet available; the story is not complete.
- The game deliberately withholds answers, so players who want clear objectives may find it frustrating.
