Rocketbirds HardBoiled Chicken PSN
(Like and sharing game for your friends)
Rocketbirds: Hardboiled Chicken is one of those PSN-era action platformers that quietly built a cult following and never really got a fair shake in the mainstream. We downloaded the NPEB00722 PSN package, ran it through our usual Windows test setup, and spent several hours with both the single-player campaign and the co-op mode. What follows is an honest breakdown of what you're actually getting, how the regional PKG links differ, and where the game still holds up in 2026.
What Is Rocketbirds: Hardboiled Chicken?
Hardboiled Chicken is the console expansion of the browser game Rocketbirds: Revolution!, built out into a full PSN release in 2011. The setting is Albatropolis, a city of birds that has fallen under a totalitarian penguin regime. You play as the titular Hardboiled Chicken — the original Coq of War — and your mission is straightforward: assassinate the penguin leader Putzki. Along the way, the game peels back the mystery of your hard-boiled past and reveals that the real enemies of Albatropolis aren't quite who they appear to be.
The structure is a side-scrolling action platformer with puzzle segments, a weapon unlock system that expands chapter by chapter, and unlockable cut scenes and music videos that fill out the universe. It's short by modern standards, but it's dense — the pacing rarely lets up, and the retro cut-scene presentation gives it a distinct identity that most 2011 downloadable titles didn't have.

Key Features
- Single-player campaign with a full weapon progression system — you collect and unlock new guns in each chapter rather than starting fully equipped.
- Local co-op campaign where two players control Budgie commandos on a rescue mission to save the general's daughter. It's a separate storyline, not a re-skin of the solo mode.
- Puzzle segments woven between combat rooms, which break up the shooting and give the game a slower, more deliberate rhythm.
- Unlockable retro cut scenes and music videos that expand the Rocketbirds universe beyond the browser original.
- Distinct art direction — a stylized, propaganda-poster aesthetic that still looks sharp and doesn't rely on texture detail to carry it.
- Multiple regional builds (EUR, USA, JPN, ASIA) so you can match your package to your region.
Our Hands-On Experience
After downloading and running the EUR package, the first thing I noticed is how quickly the game gets to the point. There's no long tutorial sequence — you're in a combat encounter within the first couple of minutes, and the weapon you're holding is deliberately weak so the first unlock feels meaningful. The controls on a standard Windows gamepad mapped cleanly; I didn't have to fight the input layer at all, which is more than I can say for a lot of PSN titles we test.
The co-op mode is where the game genuinely surprised our team. We expected a throwaway add-on, but the Budgie commando campaign has its own pacing and its own puzzle logic. It's built for two players who are actually talking to each other, not two players running the same route in parallel. If you have someone to play with locally, that's the mode to start with.
Where it falls short: the campaign is short. We cleared the solo mode in a single extended sitting, and the replay value comes almost entirely from collectibles and the unlockable videos. The puzzle sections are also inconsistent — a few of them are clever, but a couple boil down to finding the one interactive object in the room, which slows the pace without adding much challenge. And the story, while charming, leans heavily on the cut scenes to do the heavy lifting; if you skip them, the narrative barely registers.
Pros & Cons
- Pros: Tight side-scrolling combat, a genuinely separate co-op campaign, strong art direction, quick load times, and a low barrier to entry.
- Pros: The weapon unlock curve is well-tuned — each chapter gives you something that changes how you approach the next set of rooms.
- Cons: Short campaign length; inconsistent puzzle design; narrative depends on optional cut scenes.
- Cons: Some regional builds require different handling (HAN vs. PSN), which can confuse first-time users.

Trust Signals and Version Freshness
The package links here point directly to Sony's own content delivery servers (zeus.dl.playstation.net and ares.dl.playstation.net), which is the strongest signal you'll get that the files are the original distribution builds rather than repacked copies. The NPEB00722 build is the 2011 EUR release; there is no newer official patch listed in the source data, so treat this as the current available build rather than a freshly updated one. We can't verify the internal contents of each package beyond what the source provides, so we're not making any claims about scanning or cleanliness — what we can say is that the URLs are first-party CDN links.
One practical note from our install: the HAN builds list RAP as not required, which simplifies setup considerably compared to builds that need a separate license file. If you're new to this, start with a HAN build for your region and keep the PSN build as a fallback.
How It Compares
If you enjoy the bird-themed action angle, it's worth looking at Crazy Chicken X for a very different take on the same premise — that one leans harder into arcade shooting and less into narrative. For a lighter, family-friendly platformer in the same animal-starring space, Disney's Chicken Little: Ace in Action is the closer tonal match, and the original Disney's Chicken Little remains the gentlest entry point if you're introducing younger players.

Final Take
Rocketbirds: Hardboiled Chicken is a short, sharp, stylish action platformer that earns its place in a Windows download library on the strength of its co-op mode and art direction rather than its length. We'd recommend it to anyone who liked the browser original or who wants a two-player couch game that doesn't demand a huge time commitment. Go in knowing it's brief, and you'll get exactly what you came for.
