The premise is simple on paper. Miles Upshur, a freelance journalist, breaks into a Colorado asylum after an anonymous tip and finds a facility run by the Murkoff Corporation where something has gone very wrong. In practice, the game is a first-person chase simulator with a camcorder strapped to your face, and the camcorder is the smartest design decision in the whole thing.

Night vision lets you see in pitch-black corridors, but it drains battery fast. Batteries are scattered everywhere, yet never quite where you need them. During our playthrough we found ourselves rationing night vision in rooms we could have crossed in ten seconds, purely out of paranoia. That tension loop — see clearly now, be blind later — is what separates Outlast from the wave of hide-and-seek horror games that followed it.

The asylum itself is a character. Wet floors, flickering fluorescents, blood-soaked operating theaters, and patients who wander rather than patrol. Enemies do not follow fixed routes, so hiding in a locker and waiting does not always work. We got caught twice by the same patient because we assumed he had walked past. He had not.

In our experience, people grab the base game, skip the update, and then wonder why certain fixes are missing. Install the base game first, then the update, then the DLC. Survival Tips From Our Playthrough

After finishing the main story, a few habits stood out as the difference between a calm run and a frustrating one. Keep night vision off in rooms with any ambient light — the game is generous with dim light sources if you look for them. Close doors behind you; patients will open them, but the half-second delay buys you distance. And when you hear breathing, stop moving entirely before you reach for a locker. Sprinting to a hiding spot is the most reliable way to get spotted.

Battery management deserves its own note. We finished with about a dozen spare batteries because we treated night vision as a last resort rather than a default view. If you flip it on the moment a corridor goes dark, you will spend the second half of the game crawling through rooms you cannot see.

This is the entry that started everything, and it still holds up better than most of its imitators. Outlast earns its reputation. It is not perfect — the checkpointing is harsh and the last stretch loses some of the freedom that makes the middle chapters sing — but it is a tight, focused horror game that respects your attention span.
