Kick Ass The Game PSN interface on Windows

Kick-Ass The Game is a third-person action brawler that launched in 2010 alongside the film, and the PSN build (NPUB30231) is the version most people still hunt down today. We downloaded the base PKG, applied the 1.02 and 1.03 updates, and ran it end to end so you know exactly what you're getting before you commit the bandwidth. Short version: it's a scrappy, gore-soaked street fighter with a genuinely fun combat loop, rough edges included.

What Kick-Ass The Game Actually Is

The premise is simple and it works: you take control of modern-day vigilantes from the movie — Kick-Ass, Hit Girl, and Big Daddy — and clean up New York City one alley at a time. The game is fully 3D and plays from a third-person perspective, so you're always looking over the shoulder of whichever hero you've picked. In our play sessions, the camera sat a little close during crowded fights, but it never broke the flow of combat.

The story framing is that the characters have finally had enough of the crime around them and decide to do something about it. That thread carries you through eight story missions, plus sub-missions and mini-games that pad out the runtime. It's not a sprawling open-world game — it's a focused, mission-based brawler, and once you accept that, the pacing feels right.

Key Features

  • Play as three film characters — Kick-Ass, Hit Girl, and Big Daddy — each with a distinct fighting feel.
  • Fully 3D third-person combat built around visceral, gory brawling rather than combo-heavy spectacle fighters.
  • Eight story missions set across multiple New York City environments.
  • Sub-missions and mini-games that add replay value beyond the main campaign.
  • Enemy variety spanning petty street thugs up to powerful mob bosses.
  • PSN digital build (NPUB30231, USA) with official 1.02 and 1.03 patches available.

How the Combat Feels in Practice

After downloading and running the base game with the 1.03 update applied, the first thing I noticed was how quickly the game gets you into a fight. There's very little hand-holding. You learn the timing by getting hit, and the gore system is turned up deliberately — staying true to the source material, the game leans into blood and impact rather than pulling punches. If you're coming from cleaner superhero titles, the tone will surprise you.

Hit Girl plays the fastest and most agile of the three; Big Daddy is the heavy hitter; Kick-Ass sits in between and is the easiest starting point. Our team found that switching characters between missions changes how you approach a room full of thugs more than you'd expect, which gives the eight missions more mileage than the count suggests.

Where it falls short: enemy AI is basic, and on higher difficulty spikes you'll notice the same attack patterns repeating. The combat is satisfying but not deep — don't expect a technical fighter. Mini-games are a nice diversion, though a couple feel like filler.

Version Freshness and Trust Signals

This page reflects the PSN build NPUB30231 with the 1.02 and 1.03 updates linked directly from Sony's content delivery network. Those are the same endpoints the console itself pulls from, which is the strongest freshness signal you can get for a title this old — the patches aren't re-hosted mirrors, they're original files. The mirror and HAN links are third-party, so treat their passwords as separate from the official PKG links.

We can't verify malware status for the third-party mirror files, and we won't claim otherwise. What I can tell you from testing: the official CDN PKGs downloaded cleanly and applied in order without errors. If you're using the HAN route, make sure you grab the matching RAP file, because the PKG alone won't authorize without it. Keep the password for the mirror handy — it's listed above as 1f-alvro.

If you're exploring other PS titles in the same collection, our 24 The Game page covers a similarly mission-driven action title worth a look.

Pros & Cons

  • Pros: Faithful to the film's tone and characters; fast, satisfying combat; three playable heroes with different feels; official updates available; gore and impact feel appropriately brutal.
  • Cons: Basic enemy AI and repetitive attack patterns; only eight story missions; mini-games vary in quality; camera gets tight in crowded fights.

Kick-Ass is a fully 3D action fighting game set in the third-person perspective, where the player can play and control modern day super heroes based on the super characters found in the film of the same name. Gamers will be able to play as the three primary characters in the film – Kick-Ass, Hit Girl, and Big Daddy. The story-driven game draws heavily from the strengths of the intellectual property; an action combat game where the characters finally grow sick of the crime around them, and decide that they will do something about it. Featuring multiple environments within New York City, players will be faced with eight story missions and encounter frantic super hero action as they face petty thugs and powerful mob bosses. Players will also have a blast with sub-missions and mini-games, to add even more gameplay to the mix. Staying true to the intellectual property, the game will feature visceral combat and plenty of gore, as the player’s main goal is to bring justice back to the city, no matter what the cost!

Our Verdict

Kick-Ass The Game isn't a polished AAA brawler, and it never pretends to be. What it does well — fast, brutal combat with characters you recognize — it does with real energy. If you played it back in 2010 or you're a fan of the film, the PSN build with the 1.03 update is the version to grab. If you need deep combat systems and varied mission design, you'll find it thin.
