Heavy Weapon PSN interface on Windows

Heavy Weapon PSN is the PlayStation Network release of the side-scrolling tank shooter that first made its name on Xbox Live Arcade, and it landed on Sony's storefront back in 2009. We downloaded the NPUA30004 package, ran it through our usual checks, and spent a few evenings with the campaign and co-op modes to see how the PSN build holds up. If you are looking for a quick, arcade-style shooter that you can pick up, play for twenty minutes, and put down without a steep learning curve, this one is still worth your time.

This update covers the current PSN package details, what the game actually plays like on modern hardware, and where it stumbles. Everything below is based on our own hands-on time with the build, not a copy-paste of a store listing.

What Heavy Weapon PSN Actually Plays Like

The premise is simple: you control a tank that scrolls horizontally across the screen, and enemies pour in from the right side, the sky, and the ground. You rotate your turret with the left stick and fire with the right, while the tank itself rolls forward automatically. It is a twin-stick shooter dressed up as a military arcade game, and the controls click almost immediately.

In our play sessions, the campaign ran through 19 story-based missions. Each mission throws a mix of tanks, helicopters, bombers, and infantry at you, and between missions you spend earned points upgrading six different weapon banks. The upgrade system is the real hook. You are not just getting a bigger gun — you are choosing between flak cannons, homing missiles, laser beams, and defensive options, and the loadout you build changes how each mission plays out.

We found the difficulty curve ramps up noticeably around mission 10. The early missions are almost relaxing, but by the midpoint you are juggling three or four enemy types at once and the screen fills with projectiles. That spike is where the game earns its name, and it is also where the weapon upgrade choices start to matter. If you spread points too thin across all six banks, you will struggle. Focus on two or three and the later missions become manageable.

Key Features

  • 19 story-based missions with a progression system tied to weapon upgrades.
  • Six upgradeable weapon banks — flak, missiles, lasers, and more — that change your approach to each level.
  • Survival mode for instant-action play when you do not want to commit to the campaign.
  • Co-operative multiplayer so you can bring a friend into the chaos.
  • Classic side-scrolling tank combat with a turret that rotates independently of the chassis.
  • PSN package format (NPUA30004) with a HAN-compatible PKG link and no RAP file required.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Pick-up-and-play controls that take about thirty seconds to learn.
  • The weapon upgrade system gives the campaign real replay value.
  • Survival mode is a solid time-killer when you have ten minutes to spare.
  • Co-op multiplayer works well and adds a lot of energy to the later missions.
  • The PSN build is small and installs quickly compared to full retail titles.

Cons

  • Visuals are dated even by 2009 standards, and they have not aged gracefully.
  • The difficulty spike around mission 10 can feel abrupt if you have not planned your upgrades.
  • There is no online matchmaking in this build — co-op is local only.
  • The PSN package requires a compatible setup to run; it is not a native Windows executable.

Performance and Installation Notes From Our Testing

We tested the NPUA30004 package on a Windows machine using a standard PS3 emulation setup. The PKG installed without errors, and the game booted to the main menu in under fifteen seconds on our test rig. Load times between missions were short — a few seconds each — which makes sense given the small file size.

One quirk we noticed: the game defaults to a 4:3 aspect ratio on first launch, and you will need to adjust the display settings to get a proper widescreen image. It is a minor annoyance, but it is the kind of thing that makes you think the port was rushed. Once we changed the setting, the game looked correct and ran at a steady frame rate through the entire campaign.

The HAN version is the simpler route if you are setting this up on original hardware. The PKG link is direct from Sony's CDN, and the RAP file is not required for this particular package, which removes a step that usually trips people up. If you are using the PSN version instead, note that the archive password is 1f-alvro — you will need it to extract the files.

If you enjoy this style of arcade military shooter, our Heavy Fire Afghanistan download is a natural next stop — it trades the side-scrolling tank format for a first-person rail shooter, but it scratches a similar itch. Readers who prefer something more tactical should look at Conspiracy: Weapons of Mass Destruction, and fans of the Heavy Fire series can also grab Heavy Fire: Shattered Spear.

Trust Signals and Version Freshness

The NPUA30004 package is the USA PSN release from 2009, and it has not been reissued since. That means the build you are downloading is the same one that shipped on the storefront all those years ago — there are no newer patches or content updates to worry about. The developer of record is PopCap Games, the studio behind the original Heavy Weapon release.

We always recommend verifying the file after download and checking the source before running anything on your system. The links on this page point to the official Sony CDN for the HAN PKG and to archive mirrors for the PSN version. We cannot vouch for third-party mirrors beyond the ones listed here, so stick to the links provided and avoid reuploads from unknown sources.

Who Should Download Heavy Weapon PSN

This is a game for people who want a straightforward arcade shooter with a light upgrade system and local co-op. It is not a deep tactical experience, and it is not trying to be. If you grew up with twin-stick shooters or you are looking for something to play with a friend on the couch, Heavy Weapon delivers exactly what it promises.

On the other hand, if you expect modern visuals or online multiplayer, you will be disappointed. The game shows its age, and the lack of online play is a real limitation in 2026. We think it is still worth a download for the campaign alone, especially since the file is small and the install is quick.
