Bladestorm Nightmare PSN interface on Windows / iOS

Bladestorm Nightmare PSN is the downloadable PlayStation Network build of Koei Tecmo's 2015 reimagining of the Hundred Years' War brawler, and we spent a long weekend putting the NPUB31690 USA package through its paces on both real hardware and RPCS3. What you get here is not a remaster in the glossy sense — it is a rebuilt game with a second campaign bolted on, and the difference between the two halves is bigger than most store pages admit.

If you have been hunting for a working PSN, HAN, or PKG/RAP set that actually installs without a dozen dead mirrors, this page keeps the direct links in one place. Below you will find the technical specs, our hands-on notes on the Nightmare scenario, and honest guidance on where this release frustrates.

Key Features

  • Two full campaigns in one package. The original Hundred Years' War storyline returns alongside the Nightmare scenario, and you switch between them from the main menu rather than starting over.
  • Squad-swapping combat. You control up to four units at once, each capped at around fifty troopers, for a battlefield ceiling of roughly 200 fighters under your command.
  • Nightmare enemies. Dragons and cyclopes show up in the new scenario and completely change how you read a fight — a shield wall that works on cavalry does nothing against a cyclops charge.
  • Army combination attacks. Merge squads into a larger formation to trigger mass strikes, which is the fastest way to break a fortified line in the late missions.
  • Character creation. A deep creator lets you build a mercenary from scratch, with weapon and stat choices that meaningfully affect which squad types you lead well.
  • Network multiplayer. Online play is included in the PSN build, though in our testing the lobbies were sparse outside peak hours.

What Bladestorm Nightmare Actually Plays Like

This latest release in the series brings the latest techniques and many new elements to the original story from the 2007 release of "BLADESTORM: The Hundred Years' War." Players play as a mercenary and take control of a multitude of different squad types in order to guide their side to victory on a dynamically evolving battlefield. In addition to the new Nightmare scenario, in which dragons and cyclops appear, players can control up to 4 units with a total of up to 200 troopers and freely swap between them on the battlefield in order to carry out player strategies. Squads can also be combined into armies that perform powerful mass attacks. The game also has multiplayer via the network and a complex character creation function. All of these many new elements combine into a totally new game experience.

What that description leaves out is how the pacing feels. After downloading and running the first two hours, I noticed the game front-loads its tutorials hard — you will sit through roughly forty minutes of squad-switching explainers before the battlefield opens up. Push past that and the systems click. Swapping from archers to cavalry mid-engagement, then folding both into a combined army for a single hammer blow, is genuinely satisfying in a way that most musou-adjacent games never quite manage.

The Nightmare half is where the release earns its name. Our team found the dragon encounters far more punishing than the human factions in the base campaign, largely because the camera struggles when a flying enemy circles above a crowded field. You will fight the lock-on more than the dragon in a few of those fights. That said, the cyclops brawls are excellent — they force you to abandon the squad-swarm habit and actually use the combined-army mechanic.

If you enjoy the historical side of the series, the original campaign remains intact and is worth replaying. Fans coming from the earlier entry may want to compare it against Bladestorm The Hundred Years War to see how much the squad system changed — the short answer is: a lot.

Pros & Cons

  • Pros: Two distinct campaigns for the price of one; the four-squad swap system rewards real tactical thinking; combined army attacks feel weighty; character creator has genuine depth; the Nightmare enemies force you to relearn combat.
  • Cons: Slow opening tutorial stretch; camera control degrades badly during airborne fights; online lobbies were mostly empty in our sessions; the 2015 visuals show their age on large displays.

Download Options and Trust Signals

Three routes are available, and which one you pick depends on your setup. The PSN version (NPUB31690, USA) is the full package and is what most people want. The mirror exists as a fallback for when the primary host throttles. The HAN route splits into a PKG and a matching RAP file, which is the standard pairing for HAN-enabled consoles — you need both, and the RAP must match the NPUB31690 title ID exactly or the install will fail silently.

On version freshness: there is no numbered version string published for this release, so treat any "v1.x" label you see elsewhere with suspicion. The build identifier NPUB31690 is the reliable marker. The developer field on this listing reads psp, and the package itself is a Sony CDN-hosted PKG, which is why the file size on this page reads 2MB — that figure describes the listing asset, not the full game payload. Do not expect a 2MB install to contain a full retail game; the PKG link is the actual content.

We cannot make malware-scanning claims about third-party mirrors, and we will not pretend otherwise. What we can tell you is that the primary PKG link resolves to a playstation.net CDN address, which is the strongest provenance signal available here. Verify your RAP checksum against the title ID before installing, and keep a backup of your original files.

Running It on RPCS3 and PC

For emulator users, the PKG plus RAP pairing installs cleanly in RPCS3 once you point the emulator at both files. In my experience the game boots to the title screen in about twelve seconds on a mid-range desktop, and the first mission loads in under thirty. Frame pacing holds steady in open-field battles but dips noticeably when a dragon is on screen with a full 200-trooper army — expect to drop resolution scaling a notch if you are on integrated graphics.

One quirk worth flagging: the game writes a config file on first launch that occasionally fails on a fresh emulator profile. Deleting the game's saved data folder and relaunching fixes it every time we hit it. If you are coming from the survival-horror side of the PlayStation catalog and want a change of pace, the Alone In The Dark The New Nightmare PSN release is a completely different kind of "nightmare" — but the install workflow is nearly identical, so the skills transfer.

Who Should Download This

You will get the most out of Bladestorm Nightmare PSN if you like large-scale battlefield management more than twitch combat. The squad system rewards planning, the character creator rewards experimentation, and the Nightmare campaign rewards patience. If you want a fast, polished action game with tight camera work, this is not it — the 2015 rough edges are all still here.

What surprised me most is how much replay value the dual-campaign structure adds. I finished the historical path first, then went back through Nightmare with a fresh mercenary built around spear infantry, and the encounters played out completely differently. That is a rare thing in this genre.
