How It Plays: Our Hands-On Notes

The opening hours are still the hardest part. You wake up naked on a beach, punch a tree, and slowly work toward a thatch hut. Our team found that the early game is where most players quit, and the collection does not soften it — but the expanded map roster gives you options the base game never had. If the Island feels stale, Scorched Earth's heat management forces a completely different resource loop, and Aberration's vertical cave system is the most tense survival design in the whole package.

Combat pacing is where the game shows its age. Melee hit detection on smaller creatures is loose, and I noticed several instances where a raptor's attack connected a full body-length away from my character. Ranged combat is cleaner, and once you have a decent bow the inconsistency matters less. Dinosaur AI still occasionally walks a tamed creature into a rock and gets stuck, which is a known quirk rather than a bug in this build.

Loading times are the other thing to plan around. On a standard drive, moving between maps takes a noticeable stretch — long enough that I started queueing transfers before stepping away. Installing to faster storage helps considerably, and the v2.99 package is more stable during transitions than the older v2.69 build we tested previously.

In my experience, saves created on v2.69 load without issue on v2.99, but going backward is riskier, so back up before downgrading.
