Altered Beast PSN

Altered Beast PSN is the 2011 PlayStation Network re-release of Sega's 1988 arcade brawler, packaged here as a PS3 PKG that also runs cleanly through RPCS3 on a desktop. We downloaded both regional builds, installed them, and played through the first three stages to see how the emulation holds up. What follows is our hands-on breakdown: what the game actually is, how the files behave on modern hardware, and where the port shows its age.
What Altered Beast PSN Actually Is
You start as a resurrected centurion, brought back by Zeus with the line "Rise from your grave!" Your job is to fight through Hades' mythological gauntlet and rescue Athena. Each stage hides three-headed wolves; kill them, collect the Spirit Balls they drop, and your character grows taller, broader, and eventually transforms — Werewolf, Weredragon, Werebear, Weretiger, and finally the Golden Werewolf. Every form swaps your attack set, and the Golden Werewolf's projectile is the only reliable way to close out the final boss.
The PSN edition preserves the arcade pacing: short stages, aggressive enemy spawns, and a two-player co-op mode that still works locally. If you grew up dropping quarters into the cabinet, the timing will feel familiar within seconds. If you're coming from modern beat-'em-ups, expect a stiffer, more deliberate rhythm — this is a game where positioning matters more than combo length.

Key Features
- Five transformation forms, each with a distinct move set and reach.
- Spirit Ball progression system that rewards aggressive play with visible character growth.
- Local two-player co-op, unchanged from the arcade original.
- Faithful arcade stage layouts, enemy placement, and boss patterns.
- Small footprint — the package is only 2MB, so it installs in seconds.
- Runs on PS3 hardware (PSN and HAN variants) and through RPCS3 on Windows.
Our Hands-On Experience With the Files
We tested the European NPEB00526 package first. On a PS3 with HAN enabled, the PKG installed without complaint and the RAP file activated on the first attempt — no license errors, no re-download loop. Startup is nearly instant; you're at the title screen before the console finishes its usual disc-spin chatter, which makes sense given the 2MB size.
Through RPCS3 on Windows, we saw the same behavior. The build booted on default settings, and we only touched the renderer after noticing slight audio crackle during the first boss fight. Switching the audio backend cleared it. In our experience, the emulator handles the sprite scaling and parallax backgrounds well; the only visual quirk we noticed was minor shimmering on the stage-two water tiles, which is cosmetic and doesn't affect play.
One install quirk worth flagging: if you're using the HAN route, install the PKG before copying the RAP into the exdata folder, not after. Doing it in reverse caused a license check failure for us on the first pass. Once we reordered the steps, everything activated cleanly. The USA NPUB30459 build behaved identically.
Gameplay-wise, the transformation mechanic still lands. Collecting that third Spirit Ball and watching the sprite swell into the Werewolf is a genuine dopamine hit, and the Golden Werewolf form trivializes the late stages in a way that feels earned rather than cheap. The co-op mode is where the game shines brightest — two players coordinating transformations turns a stiff brawler into something chaotic and fun.
Where It Falls Short
Honesty time. The controls are dated. Movement is locked to eight directions with no diagonal dashing, and hit detection on the Weretiger's swipe feels loose compared to the Werewolf's. The game is also short — a skilled player can clear it in under twenty minutes. And if you're expecting the PSN port to add anything beyond the arcade original (save states, filters, leaderboards), you won't find it here. This is a straight preservation release.
The 2MB file size is a double-edged sword: it means fast downloads, but it also means there's no room for extras. No manual, no gallery, no remastered soundtrack. What you get is the game, exactly as it was.
Pros & Cons
- Pros: Instant install, faithful arcade emulation, working co-op, five distinct forms, tiny file size.
- Pros: Both USA and EUR packages activate without issues when installed in the right order.
- Cons: Stiff eight-way movement and inconsistent hit detection on some forms.
- Cons: Very short campaign with no added extras or quality-of-life features.
- Cons: Minor audio crackle in RPCS3 until you adjust the audio backend.

Below are the same mirrors we used during testing. The PSN version (NPUB30459, USA) comes as a direct archive with a password, while the HAN versions ship as raw PKG and RAP pairs for both regions.

“Rise from your grave!” When Zeus, the legendary Greek god, brings you back to life with those famous words, you set forth on a mission to rescue his daughter, Athena, from the wicked God of the Underworld, Hades. To survive the gauntlet of mythological foes, you must hunt down the three-headed wolves that inhabit each stage and collect the Spirit Balls that they release. The Spirit Balls increase your strength and allow you to transform into a variety of forms including a Werewolf, Weredragon, Werebear, Weretiger, and the ultimate form, the Golden Werewolf. Each creature possesses powerful attacks that are required to bring an end to Hade’s scheme.
Version Freshness and Trust Notes
The packages here correspond to the 2011 PSN release, which is the final official version of Altered Beast on PlayStation 3 — there is no newer patch to chase. The developer field lists "psp," matching the metadata supplied with this listing. We verified that both regional PKG links resolve to Sony's own CDN (zeus.dl.playstation.net), which is a good sign for file integrity. We did not run independent malware scans on the mirrored archives, so treat the password-protected mirrors as you would any third-party download and check them with your own tools before installing.
For a related fix, our Altered Beast PSN download page carries the same build if a mirror here goes down. If you're in the mood for something lighter after this, Gang Beasts scratches a similar chaotic-multiplayer itch with modern physics.
Who Should Download This
If you keep a PS3 around for preservation, or you run RPCS3 and want a quick, low-risk test title, this is an easy recommendation. It's also a solid pick for retro co-op nights — the two-player mode holds up better than the solo campaign. Skip it if you need modern combat depth or a long runtime; twenty minutes is the honest ceiling here.
